Postpartum Doula Services

What is a Postpartum Doula?

In many other countries around the world, the postpartum period is sacred. The mother is cared for and doted on, so that her whole focus is care of her newborn. Her family and friends rally around her, providing for her every need. In this country, our mothers are encouraged to get back to the gym, get back to work, get back to her "normal" life, as soon as possible. Somewhere along the way, we forgot that we need to "mother the mother".  Essentially at the core of what a postpartum doula does is education: educate mom, and her partner on care of the new baby. A postpartum doula is specially trained to assist you with breastfeeding, and any issues that may arise with it. A doula helps care for mom and her healing body, and helps nurture the entire family. She is sometimes an extra set of hands in the ensuing chaos of bringing a new baby into your home. She is often times a shoulder to lean on and an ear for listening. A doula's job may never be the same two days in a row. More often than not, the term you may have heard is "Baby Nurse". But a postpartum doula is not medically trained, and is therefore not a nurse at all.

Why do I need a Postpartum Doula?

Bringing a new baby into this world is nothing short of exhausting! And wonderful, exhilarating, and beautiful. This is a time where everything is brand new, and very different, a time where you are learning about your new baby, and he or she is learning about you.  It is a time of new fears, challenges and plenty of uncertainties. What every new family needs during this time is HELP. You very well may be a rockstar mom, and super dad and you will most likely hate to ask for help. While well meaning family members and friends are irreplaceable, a doula is trained and experienced in evidence-based, up to date research. She is able to assist your family without judgement or bias. If your family has grown by adoption or surrogacy, a doula can help make this transition smoother too, because EVERY family can benefit from hiring a doula.
